I remember a haunting Japanese poem I read many years ago, about a lily, floating down a river, crushed by the current. The image haunted me, I identified with it so much. I felt just as crushed by life. Loud noises, other people’s emotions, my own emotions, all of it overwhelmed me, pushed me off balance. It was until years later that my life began to make sense. I wasn’t a freak, overly dramatic, weird. I was a Highly Sensitive Person, and I wasn’t alone! There was no hesitation for me when I thought about the first book I would choose for my online book club. It had to be the Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine Aron. This was a book that suddenly allowed my whole life to transform. Suddenly I made sense. Elaine is a psychologist who identified and studies the trait. This groundbreaking book not only describes the trait, but also shows you its biological advantage (believe it or not there is one!) and how to care for yourself as highly sensitive.
With brains that biologically differ in how they process information, over 20% of the population is known as Highly Sensitive. If this book interests you might want to complete this quiz- Are you a highy sensitive person? Also check out the book.
Over the next month, I’ll share some reflections on the book, and on how to look after yourself if you are highly sensitive. Let me know in the comments if you are a highly sensitive person, if you’ve read this book, or even if you want to hear more about this trait.
